湖南工程學(xué)院于2000年6月由原湘潭機電高等?？茖W(xué)校（始創(chuàng)于1951年，隸屬于原國家機械工業(yè)部，是全國示范性高等工程?？浦攸c建設(shè)學(xué)校）、湖南紡織高等專科學(xué)校（始創(chuàng)于1978年，隸屬于原湖南省紡織工業(yè)廳）合并組建而成。學(xué)校秉承“鍥而不舍，敢為人先”的校訓(xùn)和“團結(jié)、嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)、誠信、創(chuàng)新”的校風(fēng)，堅持“應(yīng)用型人才培養(yǎng)”的辦學(xué)定位，形成了鮮明的工程應(yīng)用型人才培養(yǎng)特色。學(xué)校是“全國工程應(yīng)用型本科教育協(xié)作組”副組長單位、“全國高等學(xué)校教學(xué)研究會應(yīng)用型本科院校專門委員會”副主任委員單位、“普通高等教育應(yīng)用型人才培養(yǎng)規(guī)劃教材編審委員會”主任委員單位、“全國地方高校卓越工程教育校企聯(lián)盟”副理事長單位和“中國教育國際交流協(xié)會應(yīng)用型高校國際交流分會”理事單位。2007年，以優(yōu)異成績通過教育部本科教學(xué)工作水平評估；2018年，通過教育部本科教學(xué)工作審核評估。

學(xué)校堅持開放辦學(xué)戰(zhàn)略，深入開展對外交流與合作，是湖南省最早開辦中外合作辦學(xué)項目的高校之一。已與美國、澳大利亞、英國、新西蘭等國家20余所高校簽署了校際合作協(xié)議，開設(shè)了2個本科專業(yè)和2個專科專業(yè)的國際合作教育項目。

     HIE Profile

Hunan Institute of Engineering (HIE), located in Xiangtan City, the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong, is an undergraduate university sponsored by the People’s Government of Hunan Province. HIE is qualified as a pilot university to enroll master degree candidates to “serve the national item of talent cultivation for special needs”. It’s among the first batch of colleges and universities to launch “Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plans” and “New Engineering Research and Practice Project” approved by Ministry of Education, and one of the first to be selected in “2011 Project”. HIE is also a project construction unit awarding the master’s degree. In 2018, HIE was entitled to the high-level application-oriented university in the “Double First-class” Initiative of Hunan Province.

Approved by the Ministry of Education in June 2000, the official name HIE came into being as a result of the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Machinery and Electricity Technology and Hunan Textile College. Xiangtan Institute of Machinery and Electricity Technology, founded in 1951, affiliated with the former State Machinery Industry, was appraised to be one of the National Demonstration Key Institutions of College Education for Engineering. Hunan Textile College, founded in 1978, was attached to Hunan Provincial Bureau of Textile Industry. Abiding by the motto of “Perseverance and Initiative” and the spirit of “Unity, Strictness, Integrity and Innovation”, HIE has stuck to its orientation of “cultivating application-oriented talents” and has gained particular characteristics of engineering application-oriented talents. HIE is a deputy-group-leader unit of “National Application-oriented Engineering College Education Collaborative Group”, a deputy-director unit of “Application-oriented undergraduate Special Committee for National Higher Education Research Association”, and a chairman unit of “National Higher Education Editorial Committee for appointed texts for Application -oriented Talents Cultivation”. HIE is also a vice-director unit of “National Union of Local Universities and Enterprises for Outstanding Engineers Education” and a director unit of “Application -oriented College Branch of China Education Association for International Exchange”. In 2007, HIE passed the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it passed the Undergraduate Teaching Work Audit and Evaluation by the Ministry of Education. 

HIE possesses the main campus and the south campus, covering a total area of 1.204 square kilometers, with a construction area of 0.528 square kilometers. The main campus, located beside the Xiangjiang River, is in good company with the scenic belt along the river and the Muyu Lake. With its beautiful scenery, HIE is awarded the honors of “Garden Unit” and “Civilized Institution of Higher Learning” in Hunan Province.

In order to integrate the development of regional economy and electromechanical and textile industry, HIE aims at cultivating high-quality talents with practical skills and has build a comprehensive discipline category with electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, textile engineering, chemical engineering and management as its superior specialties, and engineering, management, liberal arts, science, economics and art developing synergistically. With 16 teaching departments, HIE offers 55 bachelor degrees and has 1 master degree program(including 2 majors of power engineering and textile engineering). HIE has 8 provincial “Double First-Class” disciplines of application features, 8 experimental specialties inscribed on “the Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plans” by the Ministry of Education, 8 national and provincial characteristic specialties, and 6 national and provincial comprehensive reform pilot specialties. There are 2 specialties, namely, Mechanical Design Manufacture and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, entitled to professional certification for Engineering Education. HIE has established 4 National Practical Education Platforms, 1 National Science and Technology Innovation Team for College Students, 16 Provincial Platforms for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 14 Provincial Demonstration Bases for University-Industry Cooperation and Talent Cultivation, or Excellent Practice Bases. Moreover, HIE has undertaken 51 Ministerial Collaborative Training Programs for Industry-University Cooperation and 32 Provincial Excellent Courses and Information Application Construction Projects of Higher Education. Besides, the Metalworking Practice Base has been appointed as the Training and Examination Center of Metalworking Teaching Staff in Institutions of Higher Learning.

HIE has adopted the strategy for enhancing the university by talents. There are 1160 teaching and administrative staff, including 877 full-time teachers among which there are 362 people with senior-title, 727 people with doctor or master degree and 88 doctoral and master supervisors. There are 3 National Model (or Excellent) Teachers, 4 experts awarded with Special Allowance of the State Council or Special Allowance of the Hunan Provincial Government, 2 New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, 6 members of the Instructive Committee under the Ministry of Education or the Education Department of Hunan Province, 12 Provincial and Ministerial Renowned Teachers, 14 Provincial Discipline Leaders, 21 selected in the provincial “Program for New Century 121 Talents”, 61 awarded the provincial “Young Backbone Teachers”. There are 5 Provincial Teaching Teams and Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Teams of Higher Education. 

      HIE actively propels scientific research and constantly improves the capacity of innovation and social service. HIE boasts 12 provincial scientific research platforms, including “2011” Collaborative Innovation Center and Provincial Key Laboratories. There are 9 Provincial Centers of Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching and Demonstration Laboratories, 3 Provincial Demonstration Bases of Industry-University-Research Cooperation and 1 Base of University-Local Authorities Cooperation. In recent years, HIE has undertaken 560 national and provincial scientific research projects, won 384 scientific and technological awards at the provincial, ministerial and municipal levels, obtained 440 patents, and published 1198 high-quality academic papers. HIE energetically strengthens the Industry-University-Research cooperation and has established a strategic cooperative relationship with more than 240 enterprises, signed contracts on 110 significant projects, and signed 496 horizontal research projects, with a total research funds of 0.202 billion RMB, which has brought economic benefits of more than 10 billion RMB.

    HIE persists in open education and strengthens cooperation and exchanges with foreign universities. It is among the first batch to launch collaborative project with foreign universities. HIE has established cooperative relations with over 20 universities in such countries as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and set up 4 international cooperative education projects of bachelor degree and college degree.

    Since its foundation, HIE has been sticking to the notion of finding a foothold in Hunan, opening up to the whole nation, and serving the development of regional economy and industry. HIE has accumulated experience in engineering education for 68 years, researched and practiced in the cultivation of application-oriented undergraduates for 20 years, and deepened the implementation of Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Plans for 10 years, thus providing over 110,000 highly competent personnel for industries of machinery, electricity and textile and social economic development. In recent years, the employment rate remains above 96%.
